Treat your body like you want people to treat the Earth

I am, like many purpose-driven people I know, not the best at prioritizing my own health and wellbeing.  There are so many things that need to be done – in our businesses, professional lives, families, friendships, communities, and causes that are important to us – it can be easy to put healthful eating, sleep, joy, and movement and the very bottom of our “to do list.”

And yet – when I was sitting in nature earlier this week, I got a very clear message: You need to care for yourself like you want others to care for nature.

We know we’re not separate from nature. We are nature.

What does this mean?  Just look at what we humans have done to the earth.  Does it remind you at all of how you have treated your own body and mind?

  • We continually extract from it faster than it is able to replenish itself.

  • We act as if it will always be there when we need it to be

What do we want people to do?

  • We want people to love it

  • We want people to appreciate it, in all its beauty, diversity, and imperfection

  • We want people to nourish it by giving back

  • We want people to respect its limits

  • We want people to give it what it needs

  • We want people to prioritize it

When you’re having a hard time taking the time to care for your own wellbeing, stop and remember that how you treat yourself can be a model for how others treat our home planet.
