Sarah Cain, business coach for purpose-driven entrepreneurs, outdoors in a natural setting

Welcome

I’m Sarah Cain, business coach for purpose-driven entrepreneurs & leaders.

All good trails have some twists and turns…

How does a person become a business coach that embraces her tree-hugging self?

My love of nature and the outdoors was clearly inspired by my mom. She would take us to her little hometown when we were on spring break and we’d play in the same woods and creek she played in when she was growing up. She taught us the magic of fireflies, birds and other creatures, and recruited us to help her find “cool” rocks anywhere we went. She started us on conservation work early by having us pick up trash along the road and recycling aluminum cans because, “we only have one Earth!” I can still hear her voice reading us the book Litterbugs Come in Every Size.

Fast forward a bit and I was drawn to the financial planning industry because I liked the balance of using logic and creativity to help people reach their goals. I got a degree in finance and a job working in a wealth management firm, but I soon learned that I liked building the business more than building financial plans for people. After spending time as Chief Operations Officer of the firm, I transitioned to coaching firm owners in financial services.

After being in the business world for a while, I started feeling unsettled. Businesses were destroying the environment at an alarming rate, totally ignoring the irreversible damage they were causing. They were exploiting people—both their own employees and those in the communities where they operated. Even customers weren’t being treated the way they should: for some businesses, the mantra seemed to be, “Give the least amount of value you can while charging the most you can.” And it was all in the name of “maximizing value for shareholders.” It was wrong, and I just knew there was a better way of doing things.

Then in the fall of 2019 I had a lightbulb moment: I could be part of the solution. I could use my coaching superpowers in service of the people who were using business as a force for good! If you look at my book order history, you see the monumental shift in what I was studying, from Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It and The Pocket Guide to Sales for Financial Advisors in the summer to The B Corp Handbook and The Responsible Company in late fall. I dove headfirst into learning what it meant to run a business that balances purpose and profit, and the unique challenges of being a mission-driven leader.

Since then, my scope of coaching has expanded to serve purpose-driven leaders and business owners, primarily in professional services.

I’ve coached some incredible business owners and leaders who care about making our economy more equitable, environmentally sustainable, and socially responsible. I am a blend of my “logical brain” background in finance and my earthy nature girl heart.

Throughout my life, when I’m thrown off my center or unsure of which direction to take, I’ve found I just need to take a hike in the woods. Without fail, nature shows up for me, brings me back to center, gives me clarity, and helps remind me that I’m part of something bigger. And just like nature brings me back to my center and helps me find clarity, I strive to do that for the purpose-driven business owners and leaders that I coach. Blending research-backed strategy with intuitive guidance, I support leaders like you in building a business or career that aligns with your purpose, sustains your energy, and brings your vision to life.

Values

  • Balance

As in nature, the work we do must have balance for it to be sustainable – for us, the planet, and our communities.

  • Nuance

While I may see common themes, every business, situation and person is unique. I slow down and work to understand the intricacies before diving in.

  • Fun

Yes, there’s a lot of work to do to tackle the serious challenges in our world. And…we might as well have fun while we’re doing that work!

  • Respect

We’re all on this beautiful planet together. I advocate for deep respect that honors the inherent worth of all beings—human and more-than-human—and the interconnectedness of us all.
